PTE Core: The New Test Option under Pearson Test English

What is the PTE Core Exam?

On January 30th, The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it is accepting the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core for all of its immigration programs where language tests are necessary.

Do note that this does not apply to the Student Direct Stream

Along with the CELPIP General Test and the IELTS General Training (both in English), PTE Core will be the third option for candidates to take for their permanent residence application.

This article will give further information with regard to the PTE Core Test.

So what is the PTE Core Test?

PTE Core is a computer-based English test that assesses the general speaking, writing, reading and listening skills of a candidate in a single test.

The PTE Core Test consists of 3 parts.

Part 1: Speaking and Writing - This part is 50 minutes long and it contains seven different questions types. The longest section of the PTE exam, candidates will be tested on their speaking and writing skills, making use of English that one can hear in their daily use.

Part 2: Reading - This section consists of five different question types and is for approximately 30 minutes. The PTE Core exam is an integrated skills test so at least one question type will assess writing skills as well. The question type is ‘Fill in the blanks’.

Part 3: Listening - The listening part lasts for approximately 30 minutes and contains seven different question types. The questions will be based on audio or video clips that are automatically plates, so the candidates can hear the audio and video clip only once. However they are allowed to take notes of the said audio and video clip.

How does PTE Core compare to other tests?

The recently introduced Pearson Test of English (Core) encompasses three fundamental modules: speaking and writing, reading, and listening. It employs entirely automated scoring technology, eliminating the need for human examiner interaction. The scoring scale ranges from 0 to 90, with 90 representing the highest achievable score. For example, a CLB 7 corresponds to specific score ranges: 60-68 in reading, 69-78 in writing, 60-70 in listening, and 68-75 in speaking.

This computer-based test spans approximately two hours and is conducted in over 475 global locations.

On the other hand, the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) assesses candidates across four categories aligning numerically with IRCC’s CLB benchmark levels. The test duration is around three hours. The CELPIP testing centers are available in 23 countries worldwide.

In comparison, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) evaluates candidates in the four essential abilities required for a CLB score. Results are reported through band scores in each ability, culminating in an overall band score that signifies the average performance. Achieving a CLB 7 necessitates a minimum IELTS score of 6 in all four categories.

The IELTS test lasts approximately two hours and 45 minutes and can be completed on a computer or on paper.
